Dental Implants vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options

Dental Implants vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options from Vatan Dental Group in Los Angeles, CADental implants are a popular tooth replacement option among dental professionals. They offer an array of benefits that other tooth replacement options do not, which is why they are often considered state-of-the-art. However, not everyone is a candidate for dental implants, and dental bridges or dentures are a better fit for some patients. Patients should consider all their options when deciding on tooth replacement.

A quick guide to dental implants and other options

Here is a quick comparison of dental implants with traditional options such as dental bridges and dentures.

Dental implants

Dental implants are small screw-shaped metal posts surgically implanted in the jawbone, acting as replacement tooth roots. Once the implants are placed, the patient needs time to heal and for the implants to integrate into the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. This process can take three to six months. Afterward, the dentist places abutments connecting the implants to the actual artificial teeth. For those missing individual teeth, the implant is topped with a dental crown. The dental implants attach to dental bridges or dentures for patients missing more or all of their teeth.

Though dental implants require surgery and a time commitment, they offer some exciting benefits. They are considered the tooth replacement option most similar to natural teeth. There is no worry about them falling out of place like dentures. Also, they replace the tooth root, which stimulates the jawbone, helping it stay strong.

Dental Bridges

Another popular tooth replacement option is a traditional dental bridge. A bridge is a small custom-made prosthetic made up of a pontic (false tooth) flanked on either side by dental crowns that are cemented over a patient's natural teeth on either side of the space. Like dental implants, there is no need to remove the restoration, and there is no worry of it slipping out of place like a denture. Unlike dental implants, bridges do not require surgery but do not offer the same level of stability or the same amount of jawbone stimulation. Still, a traditional dental bridge can be a more cost-effective solution than a dental implant.

Dentures

Traditional dentures are custom-made in a lab to provide a snug fit for those with missing teeth. Patients can choose between full or partial dentures depending on how many teeth they need to replace. These removable appliances restore the appearance of the smile and chewing function. However, the patient will need to take them out for cleaning and while sleeping. In addition, there is a chance they could slip out of place, but a dentist will work with the patient to make sure the dentures fit well so they are more likely to stay comfortable and in place. Dentures also tend to be a more cost-effective option. In addition, they are a desirable option for those who want to avoid oral surgery.
